Hello Everyone! Proffeserhaunted here, working on some more guides! This time a bring you today, on how to cut out pictures! What do I mean by that? It is where you take one object, and remove the background away from it so you can put it in a different scene. For instance, I take a VFK character and cut them out of the original background and place them on a beach. Thats what I am going to show you how to do. Note that this tutorial may not be that easy for begginers, so I reccomend moderate users do this tutorial.
Step 1. Go out and find a picture of a character from a game, movie, show, etc. Once done save it as a .PNG for best results and easier cut out. I am using the guard from Wizard 101, A.K.A Ravenwood.

Step 2. Open up your character with GIMP. You can download it at gimp.org.
~No Picture really Needed~
Step 3. When you have your character open click on the paths tool.

Step 4. Zoom in at 400-800 percent. I switch from 400-800 depending on how much pixelie the picture is. Pick a good starting point for your character. I always start out at the bottom of the character then go to the top, then back down. When you decided your starting point click right next to the pixel. You will know when you clicked, a circle will be placed.

Step 5. Make about two more click's along the pixel area going upwards, like shown below. Keep doing this going around the pixel area until you have fully went around your character.

NOTE: Try to use as less marks as possible for great results. It makes it easier later on.
Step 6. Once you finish tracing around your character with the path tool you probably will end up with a lot of jagged edges. Here is what I came up with when I finished tracing.

Step 7. If you look closley you can see I did not get the whole character. I did that so I could use round edges around those parts. In order to do that Click on the line and then move it to the left, right, forward, or backwords. When you do this it creates a curve. This is good on round edges. Here is an example of what it looks like curved.

Step 8: This part is trickey so read carfully. When done, zoom back into 100 % and press Ctrl L. This will open your layers dialog. Right click on your current layer and select "Add Alpha Channel".

Step 9: When done go under your main gimp dialog, and with the path tool still being used, go under, selection from path. This will make a selection around your character. Do Ctrl C.

Step 10. Now you want to go under the main gimp dialog that shows all the tools and go under, File>Aquire>Paste As New. This will paste your character into a transparent document. You could stop here, but if you notice in mine it still has some parts that you really dont need.

Step 11. NOTE: This step is really three steps into one. I will not include a picture for every little thing you have to do. With your new picture open go under your layers dialog, right click on the layer and choose "Alpha to selection". Now your picture should be selected. Go under Select>Invert. This will now select the background of the image. What you want to do is now go back under Select>Feather. Put the settings as the same as mine. After pressing okay hit the delete key. Go under Select>None, and tada! You got parts of the background out! You may have to repeate this step two or three times. Just keep it at 5.000. When done you have completed a Character Cut-out!

Step 12. Now save this as something like "Guard_Cutout_Render". When saving make sure it is a .PNG! Otherwise it will NOT keep its transparent background. When it asks for the settings of the .png file just keep them that way. Here is my final result when posting it onto VFKFF.

You can now put the guard in any background you want or use it for a signature, userbar, etc. Feel free to use my cutout for your use :-P Don't forget to post your results! Or if you have a question about this. Just hit the little post reply button :P
