I'm working on a cross-platform Java application for VFK that would be similar (in some respects) to what VMKPal was to VMK. I hope to be able to release it to the general public soon after VFK opens.
The program displays the VFK game window and the program does all the work in its own container. There is no code-to-code interaction between the program and the game, so that means this is NOT a hacking or modification tool that could give you any unfair advantage or allow any damage whatsoever. I feel that's necessary to write in order to prevent claims of "this is a hacking tool" before they begin.
My hope is to develop this with cross-platform capabilities; I'd like it to run equally across Windows, Mac OS-X, and Linux/Solaris systems.
As I continue development, I'll keep you all updated.
PROGRESS SO FAR
May 16, 2008
- Initial window development; got the Stonehenge Alpha Walk Test to display in the Java program window with a basic Swing GUI... this project looks promising!
- TOP PRIORITY - Screenshot feature added in conjunction with the GUI so you can take pictures of what's going on in the game.
May 17, 2008
- Fixed the screenshot feature so the pictures produced are a little bit cleaner.
- Removed the title bar and borders placed by the operating system
- Changed display of buttons
- Added ability to move around the program window
- Added Minimize and Close Window capability
- Weird display lag problem has been fixed
- Added a VFKBuddy logo I did in Photoshop to the upper left-hand corner of the window
- Began developing a way to customize the program FULLY
- Added a default skin with the name "Polished Wood" (this is SO your fault, CynAnne :D)
May 20, 2008
- Got the "Record" feature working so you can now record video within VFKBuddy.
May 21, 2008
- Skin configuration feature added so you can skin VFKBuddy however you want! Included skins are "gold", "polished-wood", and "steel", but you can also add your own images and use those as skins.
MOST CURRENT SCREENSHOT
May 21, 2008 - Skin configuration added and VFKBuddy sporting another skin called "gold"

I will certainly do that, Toe. Thank you very much for your offer!
I just got screenshots working in conjunction with the actual program being displayed, and I hope to be able to hook that into a button press soon.
Whereas VMKPal was primarily a Windows program, I'm trying my hardest to make VFKBuddy compatible across Windows, Mac OS-X, and Linux/Solaris as much as possible.
I'm going to miss my VMKPal too... :(

Sure thing, Toe!
Cyan, I believe you neither "ding" nor "ling", so I shall fill you in :D
VMKPal was essentially a "wrapper program" for VMK, meaning that it displayed the VMK game window inside of its own program window. This allowed Pal to hook into the Windows API and provide features like the ability to take screenshots, all without directly interacting with VMK to do so. It also saves time since you didn't have to navigate to the VMK main page, click the button, and then wait for another window to load constantly; you just fired up the program, logged in, and you were in the game.
Speaking of updates, I've got a development screenshot for you all for VFKBuddy... it's got two buttons right now ("Take Pic" and "Grab Scr"). Please keep in mind this is a VERY rough interface right now, and I'm only throwing weird-looking buttons on there right now to help me test features. The first button takes a picture of the VFK game window and the second button is mainly a development tool for me so I can show you all screenshots without having to mess around and crop things in Photoshop.
Without further ado, here is the current progress:

My pleasure, Toe. That's about the only thing I ever used Pal for, either, which is why this was the first feature I put into VFKBuddy. Until the game is released, however, there's really not all that much I can actually do until we know more about the game and the kinds of stuff we can do.
Thanks for the compliments, everyone! Seeing people happy is what keeps driving me to build cool stuff :sunny:
